Proton Saga

The Proton Saga is a Malaysian-origin entry-level sedan that Al-Haj Automotive assembles locally in Pakistan. It sits in the same segment as the Suzuki Cultus and older Honda City, targeting first-time sedan buyers and budget-conscious families. The 1.3L naturally aspirated engine is relaxed rather than sporty, comfortable at city speeds, and the automatic variants use a conventional torque-converter unit that feels smooth in stop-and-go traffic. Expect city fuel returns in the 10-13 km/l range depending on traffic and driving style. The manual gearbox is light and easy to drive.

Being a relatively recent entrant to the Pakistani market, the Saga is still building its service network. Al-Haj has authorized workshops in major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, but smaller cities have limited coverage. Parts availability is improving but not yet at the level of Toyota or Suzuki. Local mechanics outside authorized centers may be less familiar with the platform, so sticking to authorized service is advisable for now. Resale value is still establishing itself and trails the Japanese competition.

The Saga offers reasonable standard equipment for its price bracket, including airbags and ABS across most variants. The honest limitation is the thin aftersales network outside major urban centers. It suits a city-based buyer who wants a proper sedan with warranty coverage and can live without the resale certainty of a Corolla or City.
