Suzuki Mehran

The Suzuki Mehran is a rear-wheel-drive 800cc hatchback that was produced for the Pakistani market for decades before being discontinued. It comes in two main trim levels — VX and VXR — with the 0.8 suffix simply denoting the engine displacement, which is the same across all variants. The VX is the base trim with manual windows and minimal features, while the VXR adds power steering and a few comfort additions. In city traffic expect around 12-14 km/l, though the three-cylinder engine is noisy and strained at highway speeds. The four-speed manual gearbox is basic but very easy to drive in stop-and-go conditions.

The Mehran has one of the strongest parts networks in Pakistan — virtually every roadside mechanic knows this platform inside out, and spares are cheap and widely available from Karachi to Peshawar. Given the age of most units now in circulation, buyers should budget for timing belt replacement, suspension bushings, carburetor cleaning or rebuild, and AC servicing. Rust on the floor pan and wheel arches is common on older examples. Resale remains surprisingly stable for a discontinued model due to sheer demand from first-time buyers.

The honest limitation is safety — no airbags, no crumple zones, and a very light body. It suits buyers who need the lowest possible running and maintenance costs for urban commuting and are comfortable with a bare-bones driving experience.
