About BYD

BYD — short for "Build Your Dreams" — was founded in 1995 by Wang Chuanfu in Shenzhen, originally as a rechargeable battery manufacturer for consumer electronics. By the mid-2000s the company had become one of the world's largest battery suppliers and began applying that battery-first DNA to electric vehicles. Today BYD is the world's largest manufacturer of new-energy vehicles by volume, surpassing Tesla globally in 2023, with a vertically-integrated model that builds its own batteries, motors, and semiconductors in-house.

In Pakistan, BYD is sold and assembled through BYD Pakistan — a joint venture with Mega Motor Company, a subsidiary of The Hub Power Company (Hubco). Local operations launched in 2024, opening with the Atto 3, Seal, and Sealion compact and mid-size electric models. Pakistan benefits from BYD's vertical integration: the Blade battery technology that the company developed in-house is built into every model, and the global scale keeps pricing tighter than imported competitors.

What makes BYD relevant in Pakistan today is timing. The country's EV policy and the gradual rollout of charging infrastructure have created a window where electric ownership is moving from "early adopter" to "mainstream possibility" — and BYD arrived with a full lineup, local backing from Hubco's grid expertise, and the global credibility of being the largest EV maker on earth.

BYD FAQs

Common questions Pakistani buyers ask before choosing this brand.

Who owns and manufactures BYD cars in Pakistan?
BYD cars in Pakistan are sold and progressively assembled through BYD Pakistan — a joint venture between BYD of China and Mega Motor Company, which is a subsidiary of The Hub Power Company (Hubco). The local launch began in 2024, drawing on Hubco's power-and-grid expertise to support EV ownership infrastructure.
Which BYD models are available in Pakistan?
The opening Pakistan lineup centres on the Atto 3 (compact electric SUV), the Seal (mid-size electric sedan), and the Sealion (mid-size electric SUV). All three use BYD's in-house Blade battery technology. The Pakistan portfolio expands as the brand scales — confirm current availability with a BYD dealer.
Are BYD cars all electric, or are there hybrids?
BYD globally offers both full-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) lineups, but the Pakistan launch has focused on the BEV side — Atto 3, Seal, and Sealion are all full electric. PHEV variants of the Seal and other models are sold in other markets and may be expanded into Pakistan as the local lineup grows.
What is the Blade battery, and why does BYD use it?
BYD's Blade battery is a long-form lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell design developed in-house. Its key advantages are improved thermal stability — meaningfully reducing the risk of thermal runaway in a crash — plus a longer cycle life than typical NMC chemistries. It's the same battery that goes into BYD's buses and stationary storage products, which is why the company has been able to scale it cost-effectively into passenger cars.
How does BYD compare to MG and Hyundai EVs in Pakistan?
BYD, MG (with the ZS EV and 5 EV), and Hyundai (with the Ioniq 5 and 6) are the three main EV competitors in the Pakistan new-car market. BYD's pitch is the global EV leader badge plus the Blade battery technology; MG leads on price for the entry EV segment; Hyundai brings the broadest dealer network and the strongest Korean engineering reputation. Cross-shopping all three is the right move for any serious EV buyer.
Is the EV charging infrastructure ready for BYD ownership in Pakistan?
The charging network is still building out — fast public chargers are concentrated in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, with motorway corridors gradually expanding. Most BYD owners rely primarily on home charging (the cars ship with a home wall-box option), with public DC fast charging used for intercity trips. Hubco's involvement on the BYD Pakistan side is a positive signal for local charging-grid expansion.
